In a hospital bed on the old side of town
laid a ww1 vet in a shaggy white gown
Remembering the days he served his nation
And being hit by bullets with a stinging sensation
He was stationed in the trenches in Germany
With hundreds of others for what felt like eternity
With a drop of the gas, and the shot of the gun
He’d pick off enemies one by one
This is how it went for 3 straight years
Until this old man was stricken with fear
He was shot in the leg, and knocked in the skull
He toppled to the ground, lifeless and cold
Under a dark blue sky, with explosions sound
They picked his crippled body off of the ground
They whisked him away, and doped him with meds
And wrapped a bandage around his head
As they carted him off, he said to himself
Hopefully no other American has to live this hell
As he lay there motionless he often heard
What sounded to him like the end of the earth
The veteran always remembered the days of the war
How they shipped in troops, more and more
How he grieved for the wounded, and the dead
How he would never forget the words that they said
Now this veteran lay in a hospital in Maine
With a chunk from his skull and some missing brain
He will always remember his fallen friends
Forever and ever until his life ends
laid a ww1 vet in a shaggy white gown
